Classic Green Bean Casserole: A Hearty and Nutritious Side Dish Perfect for Any Occasion

Green bean casserole garnished with colorful flowers for a festive presentation.

With Thanksgiving coming up in a few weeks, have you started thinking about how you will celebrate? To me and many people, Thanksgiving and Christmas are especially meaningful holidays because these special times bring families and friends together. On top of that, we all celebrate by feasting!

Wouldn’t life be a whole lot easier if holiday meals could all be super easy to make, money-saving, and deliciously healthy? I’ve put together the perfect series of recipes that would save you hours of cooking time and let you enjoy more time with your loved ones. Starting with the Green Bean Casserole, my yummy holiday side dish recipes also include Corn Bread, Scalloped Corn Casserole, and Sweet Potato Casserole.

The Green Bean Casserole is a classic holiday side dish with an added touch of nutrition. It is super easy to make and bakes to golden perfection in the baking dish. With just 5 ingredients, it only takes 5 minutes to prepare. A perfect blend of green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions, this recipe is ideal for family gatherings or holiday dinners.

I used to dread opening cans with can openers because I’ve cut myself with the sharp lids before. Ever since I found this super cute automatic can opener, I actually love watching it spin and spin around the can. The best part of it is taking the lid right off without ever worrying about hurting myself again.

Beyond its delightful taste, this green bean casserole offers nutritional benefits. Green beans are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as fiber, which supports digestion and heart health. The low-sodium soy sauce adds a depth of flavor without overwhelming sodium levels, while the addition of milk provides calcium and protein, essential for bone health. Altogether, this delicious dish provides valuable nutrients for a wholesome meal experience.

I am usually not a big fan of green beans; however, I love them in this dish. The savory green beans in the creamy sauce, with the boost of soy sauce flavor, and crunchy fried onions balance all the flavors and textures perfectly. The kids even added more fried onions on top and ate them like snacks, oblivious of all the green beans buried underneath! Who knew eating veggies could be so much fun?

I hope you will enjoy this super easy and yummy dish, save your valuable time in the kitchen, and enjoy more precious moments with your loved ones over the holidays!

Note

Drain the Green Beans Well – Excess liquid can make the casserole too watery. Make sure to fully drain the canned green beans before mixing.

Use Fresh or Frozen Green Beans for Extra Texture – While canned green beans are convenient, using fresh or frozen green beans (blanched briefly in boiling water) can add more texture and flavor.

Add a Splash of Milk – A small amount of milk mixed with the cream of mushroom soup helps create a smoother, creamier consistency.

Season to Taste – Taste the mixture before baking and adjust the salt, pepper, or soy sauce to your preference, as canned ingredients can vary in saltiness.

Wait to Add Fried Onions Until the End for Extra Crunch – For the crispiest topping, add half the fried onions to the casserole before baking and the other half during the last 5 minutes in the oven.

Bake Until Golden and Bubbling – The casserole is ready when it’s hot throughout and the edges are bubbling. This ensures the flavors are well combined and the texture is perfect.

Experiment with Extra Flavors – Try adding a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top or a pinch of garlic powder in the mix for a unique twist.
