What do you usually do with fruits that are too sour to eat but can’t be thrown away because you don’t want to be wasteful? Earlier this week, I bought a box of blueberries. It was so sour that no one wanted to eat them, so I mixed them with some apples and taught my daughter how to make a super easy dessert – Blueberry Apple Crumble.

A crumble is a baked dessert with a crumbly topping over fruit. It’s made with a combination of sugar, butter, and flour that gets “crumbled” over the top of the fruit filling. This is similar to a crisp, which usually has oats in the topping. Our Blueberry Apple Crumble is the perfect balance of sweet and tart, featuring juicy blueberries and crisp apples topped with a crunchy, wholesome crumble made of all-purpose flour and natural butter.

This best Blueberry Apple Crumble recipe is so easy, my daughter made it in about 10 minutes. She simply threw the blueberries and diced apples into my favorite Le Creuset baking dish, mixed up sugar, butter, and flour in the mixer bowl, then crumbled the mixture on top of the fruits. It only took 30 minutes to bake, and she kept running over to the oven to check on the “rise” of her extraordinary creation!

Blueberries are the star of this crumble. They are loaded with antioxidants that help combat free radicals, vitamins C and K that support immune and bone health, and dietary fiber that aids digestion. Complementing the blueberries are crisp apples, which bring in an extra dose of fiber and immune-boosting vitamin C. Together, these fruits create a symphony of flavors that’s both satisfying and nutritious.

After dinner, we gave her the biggest slice, because she made the delicious dessert for us. We also tried topping everyone’s blueberry apple crumble slice with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, and we loved it both ways! The loveliest part of the night was when my daughter asked if she could make another dessert for the family using different fruits next week. I love it when kids try to help and we as adults give them the chance to be the masters of their creations.

I hope you will enjoy this irresistible dessert and be inspired to create more versions of mouthwatering crumbles using all sorts of leftover fruits at home!

Mix the Crumble:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour with ½ cup of sugar.

  2. Add in ½ cup of melted butter.

  3. Mix thoroughly by hand until the mixture forms a crumbly texture.

Assemble the Crumble:

  1. Grease a baking dish with a thin layer of butter. Lay the apple slices evenly on the bottom, followed by a layer of blueberries on top of the apples.

Add the Topping:

  1. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the fruit layers, ensuring complete coverage.

Bake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the crumble turns golden brown.

Serve:

  1. Remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious and nutritious Blueberry Apple Crumble!
